A recent study indicates that individuals who stop using popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People using these drugs need to be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Users who have stopped the medication describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," described a patient.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle management.
