A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's key government projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” declared the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term finished the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party called for an urgent suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in total adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
